Mercia Fund Management backed the academic research platform in its first external funding round.

The funding package from BGF and Lloyds Bank will accelerate growth plans at the 54-year-old manufacturer.
Bristow Group and MMC Ventures have backed drone inspection provider Sky-Futures in a $5.7m investment round.
"This partnership between Bristow and Sky-Futures enables us to rapidly expand the operational delivery of drone-based inspection services in the global oil and gas market. We’re really excited because it allows us to enhance our advanced technology platform that powers industrial data capture and analysis, providing our clients with increasingly valuable and actionable information. We’re working on automating the entire analysis process using algorithms to provide a high degree of confidence to engineers. This will enable more efficient operations, planning and maintenance of the infrastructure."
The investment round was led by an Asian corporate investor alongside existing backers to fund the commercial launch of Cyto-Mine.
"Sphere Fluidics Limited has recently successfully developed an alpha-version of its single cell analysis and characterization system (Cyto-Mine® for the biopharmaceutical discovery and development market. We have also convinced several leading biopharmaceutical companies to fund development of this system – indicating the global potential of the product. This new funding will used to develop the manufactured version of Cyto-Mine® (see image below) and enable its commercial launch later this year. This system is transformational for the Biopharmaceutical market."
The investment round was led by Atomico with participation from JamJar Investments and several angel backers.
