Cambridge-based biodiversity data company Pivotal has secured £4.5m in seed funding to expand access to ecological data. The round was led by Octopus Ventures, with participation from AENU, The Clearing Ventures, and Pale Blue Dot.
The capital will be used to transform the economics of biodiversity tracking and construct a definitive platform for large-scale measurement. Pivotal uses ground-based sensors and artificial intelligence to compile species-level datasets, aiming to reduce data collection and analysis costs significantly.
Alongside the funding, the company announced the appointment of Dr Ben Tregenna as chief technology officer. The business was founded last year by Cameron Frayling and Zoe Balmforth to support supply chain measurement and regulatory compliance.
From the founder
"Companies struggle to track their supply chains, and governments and regulators lack the data to enforce regulation and effectively pursue biodiversity goals like the UN’s 30 by 30. With affordable, scalable analytics of species-level data, we can better incentivise and track change in biodiversity over time, and open up new, impactful and secure mechanisms of investment."

Investor perspective
"Pivotal’s model is positioning them to become the vital data source for biodiversity restoration and the catalyst for a range of new ways to understand, improve and link financial rewards to biodiversity."
