Oriole Networks is a London-based deep-tech company that has developed a photonic networking platform designed to eliminate electronic switches from data centres.
Oriole Networks has secured approximately $35m across two rounds of funding in 2024 to support its development of optical networking technology. The capital was provided by a syndicate of investors including Plural, UCL Technology Fund, Clean Growth Fund, Xtx Ventures, and Dorilton Ventures.
The London-based startup, which spun out from University College London, uses light rather than electricity to connect processors in data centres. This approach aims to reduce power consumption and latency in large-scale artificial intelligence systems.
The company has subsequently announced a major collaboration with semiconductor designer AMD to deploy its photonic network within the UK government backed ARIA Scaling Inference Lab.
From the founder
"A year ago, we were proving the physics; today, we’re proving the business. Our collaboration with AMD has moved from concept to deployment to a system an order of magnitude larger, and the data proves this is already driving performance increases at pace,"
