Material Evolution raises £15m in Series A funding to scale low-carbon cement production

The funding round was led by KOMPAS VC to support manufacturing expansion and further research and development.

£15.0MSeries A

Material Evolution manufactures sustainable low-carbon cement using industrial waste streams and a low-energy alkali fusion process.

Material Evolution has secured £15m in a Series A funding round to scale its low-carbon cement manufacturing operations. The round was led by KOMPAS VC, with participation from Norrsken VC, CircleRock Capital, and existing backers including Playfair Capital, At One Ventures, SkyRiver Ventures, and HG Ventures, alongside strategic investment from SigmaRoc.

Founded in 2017, the company has developed an alternative production method that replaces high-temperature kilns with an ambient temperature alkali fusion process utilising industrial waste. The fresh capital will be directed towards expanding production facilities, advancing research and development for new construction products, and creating blueprints for international licensing.

The oversubscribed round follows notable commercial traction, including advanced offtake agreements exceeding 35,000 tonnes of product. Management aims to leverage these resources to accelerate decarbonisation across the construction sector without compromising on structural performance.

From the founder

"What makes Material Evolution different is that we don’t believe it will be one material that saves the world. We believe that to rapidly scale across the industry we need to have localised material sources. We have created a product that not only produces lower emissions but is also lower in cost and has a higher performance. There is no silver bullet solution, but we believe that by decentralising cement production and using previously inaccessible waste we can scale our solution on a global level and truly change the cement industry."

Investor perspective

"Decarbonising building materials like cement and steel are core to our investment focus. Material Evolution is the best-kept secret in this space and has demonstrated that by taking a fundamentally different approach to product development. The carbon footprint of cement can be dramatically reduced and eventually eliminated, without compromising on product performance."
