TidalSense secures £7.5m from BGF and Downing to launch diagnostics solution

The funding round was led by BGF and Downing to support the rollout of the company's respiratory diagnostics business.

£7.5M

TidalSense is a healthtech company developing artificial intelligence driven diagnostic and monitoring tools for chronic respiratory conditions. Based in Cambridge, the business uses patented sensor technology to detect lung function changes.

Cambridge based healthtech TidalSense has secured £7.5m in a fundraising round co-led by BGF and Downing. The fresh capital will be directed towards expanding the company's diagnostics business and targeting primary care providers across the UK. TidalSense has created a handheld device called N-Tidal, which uses sensor technology and machine learning to deliver rapid, point of care diagnoses for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma.

The investment arrives as healthcare systems face mounting pressure from outdated testing methods such as traditional spirometry, which remains time consuming and prone to technique dependence. By providing near real time analysis through relaxed breathing tests, TidalSense aims to alleviate stretched patient wait times and improve early detection rates for conditions that currently affect a tenth of the global population.

From the founder

"COPD is the third leading cause of death in the world and prevalence of respiratory diseases is rising. But the current clinical pathway for COPD diagnostics is stuck in the 1800s and is ineffective, inefficient and expensive. In England alone, the NHS estimates that a third of people with hospital admissions from COPD have not been diagnosed, by which point their disease has progressed, their quality of life has deteriorated and the cost to the healthcare system has ballooned."
