SmartKem secures Series A funding from new syndicate and Finance Wales to commercialise flexible semiconductor technology
BASF Venture Capital, Octopus Investments, and Entrepreneurs Fund joined existing backer Finance Wales to fund the commercialisation of SmartKem's tru-FLEX materials.
SmartKem develops high-performance organic semiconductor materials for flexible displays and electronics. The company is based in North Wales.
SmartKem has completed a significant Series A funding round backed by a syndicate including BASF Venture Capital, Octopus Investments, and Entrepreneurs Fund, alongside existing backer Finance Wales. The capital will enable the company to advance its tru-FLEX organic semiconductor materials toward full commercialisation and market-readiness.
Founded in 2009, the business develops materials that allow manufacturers to produce thin-film transistors with high physical flexibility for bendable mobile devices and wearable applications. The fresh funding will support current and future partner programmes across Asia as the firm scales up operations.
Finance Wales, which has backed the business since its inception, participated alongside the new investor syndicate to provide capital for commercial exploitation. The company aims to capitalise on growing global demand for flexible display technologies.
