Edinburgh-based PlayerData builds wearable technology and software that helps amateur and professional sports teams track performance and analyse training sessions. The startup combines machine learning with biometric data to offer actionable insights and injury prediction across multiple disciplines.

Edinburgh-based wearable technology startup PlayerData has secured £750k in a seed funding round backed by private investors including Sir Terry Leahy. The capital will be deployed to accelerate product development and support market entry for the company sports performance monitoring systems.

Co-founded by University of Edinburgh graduates Hayden Ball and Roy Hotrabhvanon in 2017, PlayerData offers the EDGE platform, which combines hardware and software to track athletic metrics such as speed and distance covered on the pitch. The system has already gained traction across various levels of football, including Clydebank FC.

The fresh funding arrives as the firm prepares to roll out the second iteration of its EDGE platform later this year, expanding its applications into more technique-based individual sports. Leadership intends to use the resources to widen the company reach in football and bridge the technology gap for both amateur and elite competitors.

From the founder

"We went to market with EDGE six months ago and have already signed up a series of sports teams including football clubs from grassroots to professional level across the UK."
