Plymouth-based startup manufacturing uncrewed ocean robots designed to withstand extreme weather.

Oshen has raised $5m in financing led by Lunar Ventures to scale up the manufacturing of its C-Star ocean robots. The round also saw participation from AlbionVC, Twin Track, Concept Ventures, and several angel investors who will act as advisors.

Founded in April 2022 by Imperial College London engineering graduates Anahita Laverack and Ciaran Dowds, the company produces compact uncrewed surface vehicles that operate in fleets to collect real-time ocean data. The fresh capital will be directed towards meeting rising demand across defence and climate-related projects, including ship detection, subsea infrastructure protection, and anti-submarine warfare.

From the founder

"We’re making the ocean’s eyes and ears, and we need a lot of them. Seventy per cent of the planet is ocean, and we can barely see any of it in real time. That’s not a sensing problem anymore; the technology works, and it works in the worst conditions on Earth. It’s a manufacturing problem"
