OPCI develops machine learning tools designed to assist clinicians with decision making concerning elective surgery. The company is based in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Healthcare machine learning startup OPCI has secured £600k in a seed investment round. The funding was provided by two unnamed regional investors with expertise in the medical device sector.

Founded earlier this year by orthopaedic surgeons Justin Green and Mike Reed, the Newcastle based firm has developed a platform named Open Predictor. The software utilises machine learning trained on anonymised patient data to calculate risk scores for individuals scheduled for hip or knee replacement operations.

The capital will support the ongoing development of the platform alongside healthcare professionals and patients. OPCI is currently undertaking a pilot programme in Southwest Wales in partnership with Hywel Dda University Health Board and Swansea Bay University Health Board, aiming to integrate the software into pre-operative assessments and help reduce elective surgery waiting lists.

From the founder

"During my career as an orthopaedic surgeon, I’ve identified an opportunity for the pathway from patient referral to surgery to be improved through technology. With the length of waiting lists having only increased, the need to take advantage of this technology is as acute as ever."
