Matta develops industrial artificial intelligence systems that help factories monitor, interpret, and optimise production lines in real time. The Cambridge spin-out builds self-learning technology designed to automate quality control and reduce manufacturing waste.

Cambridge industrial artificial intelligence spin-out Matta has secured £10.4m in seed funding to accelerate product development and scale deployments. The round was led by Lakestar, with participation from Giant Ventures, RedSeed, InMotion Ventures, 1st Kind, Unruly Capital, and Boost VC, alongside grant backing from Innovate UK and the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Founded by researchers from the University of Cambridge, the company deploys self-supervised computer vision systems that adapt to production lines within hours. The fresh capital will be directed towards expanding customer adoption, advancing research into self-tuning machinery, and growing its presence across European and American manufacturing markets.

From the founder

"Everything around us is manufactured, from the mug on your desk to the optical cables carrying our Netflix binges. Everyone talks about the glamorous side of manufacturing: generative design, material discovery, digital twins, but few spend time on the factory floor. The hard part isn’t dreaming things up inside a computer; it’s making them work at scale. Manufacturing still runs on human know-how, the kind that lets someone on the line kick a machine just right, or run a finger over a scratch, and say, ‘that’s thirty-four microns wide.’ We’re using AI to capture and scale that tacit knowledge, so engineers can design things that actually work in the real world. It’s time to manufacture the impossible."
