Llusern Scientific is a university spinout developing rapid molecular diagnostic test systems for human and animal healthcare. Its flagship product, Lodestar DX, delivers accurate diagnostic results in thirty five minutes to help combat antibiotic resistance.
Cardiff-based diagnostics firm Llusern Scientific has secured a substantial six-figure investment from the Development Bank of Wales. The funding forms part of a wider initiative that has seen the regional backer deploy equity capital into several Welsh academic spinouts to date in 2024. Llusern Scientific will use the fresh capital to commercialise its rapid diagnostic tests for urinary tract infections and scale its operations. The company was founded by academic researchers to develop affordable diagnostic tools addressing antibiotic resistance.

"UTI prevalence is rising with an ageing population and the increase in antibiotic resistant infections. The gold standard for UTI diagnosis is microbiological urine culture and, in the UK, millions of urine tests are processed and cultured each year. However, a major drawback of urine culture systems is the time lag of approximately two days between specimen collection and pathogen identification. Fast and accurate diagnosis, leading to a rational treatment, is essential to achieve a timely and effective therapy."
