Cosine builds frontier artificial intelligence models trained entirely on domestic infrastructure for regulated and sensitive sectors.
Cosine, a British artificial intelligence startup, has secured $8m in funding from a group of investors including Lakestar, SOMA Capital, and Gaingels. The capital will support the company as it develops sovereign AI capabilities and works with a newly assembled coalition of major domestic institutions to build a custom model trained entirely on local infrastructure.
The three-year-old firm, which previously participated in Y Combinator, plans to deploy its upcoming Lumen Sovereign model by the end of 2026. The system will run on Isambard-AI, a powerful supercomputer supported by the UK government, to serve sectors such as defence, banking, and telecommunications that require data security and independence from foreign technology.
From the founder
"AI is the single most important technology of our generation. Enterprises are increasingly waking up to the risk of being wholly dependent on foreign providers for this technology. Vendor lock-in creates security risk, dependency risk, and cost escalation risks,"
