Caudal Energy raises £4.3m in seed funding to advance its tidal energy technology
Oxford Innovation Finance and angel investors backed the spinout to fund sea trials and prepare for commercial deployment.
An Oxford University spinout developing biomimetic tidal energy systems inspired by marine mammal movement.
Caudal Energy has secured £4.3m in a seed funding round led by Oxford Innovation Finance through its EIS Growth Fund and OION angel investors. The capital will allow the company to conduct full-scale sea trials, advance its technology readiness level, and build commercial partnerships ahead of a planned commercial rollout in 2028.
Formerly known as Porpoise Power, the Oxford-based firm uses modular, fin-based oscillating foils that mimic marine mammal tails. This design operates efficiently in slower tidal flows, reducing maintenance complexity and opening up new geographic sites for predictable baseload power generation.
From the founder
"This investment from Oxford Innovation Finance will assit us in validating our technology at full scale, demonstrating that predictable tidal energy can be generated cost-effectively in a much wider range of locations than previously possible, and move us closer to bringing reliable, renewable baseload power to market. Their experience in supporting ambitious deep technology businesses, together with the expertise of their angel investor community, will be invaluable as we continue to scale."
