Parkwalk Advisors backed the round to help scale the federated data platform across global healthcare systems.
Bitfount provides a federated AI platform that enables secure collaboration between healthcare providers and pharmaceutical companies without sharing sensitive patient data. The technology streamlines clinical research by processing information across electronic health records and medical imaging.
Bitfount has secured £5.9m in Series A funding to scale its privacy-preserving network for healthcare systems worldwide. The round was backed by Parkwalk Advisors, Ahren Innovation Capital, Pace Ventures, Foresight Group, and Portfolio Ventures.
The company's federated AI platform allows algorithms to be brought to the data rather than moving data itself, resolving privacy and regulatory roadblocks in clinical research. The capital will be deployed to drive product development and grow partnerships with pharmaceutical companies and academic institutions.
The raise follows recent UK government initiatives aimed at reducing clinical trial set-up times and establishing the country as a primary destination for medical trials.
From the founder
"Clinical research is broken by data silos,"
Blaise Thomson
CEO and Co-founder at Bitfount
Investor perspective
"We are excited to back Blaise Thomson, who previously successfully sold a Parkwalk portfolio company to Apple, and the rest of the formidable Bitfount team. Bitfount was conceived during Blaise’s time at Apple as a technology that could overcome many of the internal and external collaboration challenges faced by organisations with confidential data and security concerns. Bitfount’s initial focus on clinical trials is an area ideally suited to this type of AI application."
