Alesi Surgical is a medical technology company that develops systems to remove hazardous surgical smoke from operating theatres. Its flagship platform uses electrostatic precipitation to clear smoke during minimally invasive procedures.

Alesi Surgical has secured £7m in a funding round led by IW Capital, with participation from existing backers IP Group and Mercia Ventures. The company intends to direct the capital towards scaling its international commercial operations and advancing its Ultravision2 platform amid tightening regulatory standards for theatre safety.

The Cardiff-based firm addresses the issue of surgical smoke, which is generated in the vast majority of operations and poses health risks to medical personnel. Its proprietary technology relies on electrostatic precipitation rather than traditional suction, allowing for clear visibility without disrupting clinical workflows.

From the founder

"Electrosurgical tools have transformed modern surgery but also generate surgical smoke that affects the quality and efficiency of surgery and poses risks to operating theatre staff. For years, available solutions have required trade-offs between effectiveness and workflow disruption, slowing adoption across the industry. As awareness grows that smoke management is integral to surgical safety and efficiency, solutions that tackle smoke at its source are becoming increasingly important for supporting the next generation of minimally invasive and robotic procedures."

Investor perspective

"Surgical smoke is becoming an increasingly important priority for hospitals with a need to address both visibility and safety in the operating room, supported by growing regulatory and compliance tailwinds. Solutions that integrate seamlessly into surgical workflows will define the next phase of adoption."
