The funding round was led by DSW Ventures with backing from Mercia and SFC Capital.

£1.6MSeed

Nottingham-based medical technology company that has developed a biodegradable biomaterial for 3D printed implants.

Medtech firm 4D Biomaterials has secured £1.6m in seed funding to expand its product range and team. The investment round was led by DSW Ventures, with participation from the MEIF Proof of Concept and Early Stage Fund, Mercia, and existing backer SFC Capital. The fresh capital will be directed towards developing new product partnerships and creating five new jobs at the company base in MediCity.

The Nottingham-based business emerged from academic research at the Universities of Warwick and Birmingham, commercialising a biodegradable material known as 4Degra. Following a leadership transition last year, the firm is now positioned to scale its operations and introduce its novel implants to wider medical markets.

From the founder

"I am delighted to welcome DSW Ventures and Mercia on board at this exciting time for the company. The raise was oversubscribed by 60%, helped by the continuing support of SFC Capital and our angel investors. This puts us in a strong position as we move into the next phase of taking our products to market."
