Recirculate Systems has raised £350k in funding from a group of angel investors to launch Delete Cups, a friction-free reusable cup scheme built on RFID technology. The capital will support the commercialisation of the system, which automatically refunds deposits when chipped cups are returned to collection points. The company currently employs five staff and anticipates creating ten new jobs over the coming year.
The venture stems from trials conducted across two pop-up cafes in Braintree Village. Founders Alasdair Hood, Dominic Brady, and Tommy Herbert developed the technology in partnership with RFID specialist CoreRFID to eliminate the friction typically associated with reusable cup schemes.

"Around 2.5 billion coffee cups are thrown away each year in the UK alone, with terrible consequences for the environment. The problem is that single-use cups are so convenient. While people like the idea of recycling, current systems involve so much time and effort that it deters all but the most committed."
