Phico Therapeutics secures up to £13.2m from CARB-X for clinical trials

Phico Therapeutics is a biotechnology company developing engineered phage technology to create a new generation of antibiotics.

Phico Therapeutics has secured up to £13.2m in grant funding from CARB-X to advance its antibacterial therapy through Phase 1 clinical trials. The capital will support intravenous studies targeting antibiotic resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa in ventilated associated pneumonia. The financing comprises an initial £3.8m grant followed by up to £9.4m in milestone payments.

The company uses its engineered phage platform to deliver small acid-soluble spore proteins that inactivate bacterial DNA. This approach aims to address the growing threat of drug-resistant infections without harming other cells or contributing to further antimicrobial resistance.
