Optalysys develops advanced photonic processing technology designed to accelerate secure data processing and confidential computing.

Optalysys has secured £21m in a Series A funding round led by Lingotto, imec.xpand, and Northern Gritstone. The capital will be deployed to advance the company's photonic computing technology, enabling fully homomorphic encryption to operate at scale. The funds will also support team expansion across England, Europe, and the United States, alongside the launch of cloud-based services and accelerator programmes.

Fully homomorphic encryption allows computations on encrypted data without prior decryption, closing a significant security vulnerability in cloud systems. Conventional processors struggle with the heavy computational load required for such encryption, but Optalysys has created an advanced photonic semiconductor to overcome this bottleneck. The latest investment marks a major milestone for the founders following decades of research into optical computing.

From the founder

"Fully Homomorphic Encryption has the power to unlock the full value of data – but despite its advantages, it is currently unviable for anything beyond basic processes – this is where Optalysys comes in. Our Enable technology allows us to turbo boost the workflows and address the underlying bottlenecks that hold FHE back."

Investor perspective

"Optalysys presents a groundbreaking semiconductor technology to reduce energy consumption, boost processing power, and enhance data security. The capability to unlock the power of FHE with their photonic computing technology will enable new markets with advances in encrypted AI. We look forward to working with Nick, Rob, and the team to bring a new level of trust and security to how we use our data."
