Intelligent Energy secures £17m in government-backed funding to advance hydrogen aviation technology

Intelligent Energy is a Loughborough based deeptech enterprise that develops advanced hydrogen fuel cell systems for commercial aviation and other applications.
Intelligent Energy has secured £17m in government-backed funding to advance its hydrogen fuel cell technology for commercial aviation. The capital was provided by the Aerospace Technology Institute, the Department for Business and Trade, and Innovate UK, alongside support from academic and research institutions.
The investment will partly finance a £7.1m hydrogen test facility in Northamptonshire as the company prepares for full-scale production and certified aircraft deployment by 2030. The initiative aims to develop a modular 300kW hydrogen fuel cell system featuring a patented water-injection cooling method.
Chief Executive David Woolhouse noted that the programme is designed to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen-powered aircraft at scale. The project builds on more than two decades of research and development in fuel cell technology.
