Foundational raises £8.2m in pre-seed funding to build a satellite laser ranging network
The round was backed by Inflection, Final Frontier, and other investors to scale ground station construction and hardware manufacturing.
Foundational develops commercial satellite laser ranging infrastructure to track orbital objects with precision.
London-based startup Foundational has emerged from stealth with £8.2m in pre-seed funding to commercialise its satellite laser ranging technology. The capital will enable the team to construct additional ground stations, manufacture hardware internally, and scale the production of retroreflectors alongside data platform development.
The financing drew participation from a syndicate of investors including Inflection, BACKED, Final Frontier, Adjacent, and Type One Ventures. According to the company, this transaction marks the largest pre-seed round for a space-tech enterprise in Europe to date.
From the founder
"Every time you tap your card, check your map or make a phone call, you’re relying on satellite infrastructure — but the technology we use to track exactly where satellites are hasn’t kept up with the explosion of the space economy."

CEO and co-founder at Foundational
Investor perspective
"Almost everything in orbit, and a surprising amount on the ground, depends on knowing exactly where things are. Existing measurement technology isn’t suitable for the next space era or the rise of physical AI and its navigation challenges. Foundational is rebuilding it as a commercial network with flying hardware and paying customers, rooted in decades of scientific research the team has been contributing to."
