£21.8MSeries B

Element develops a secure collaboration and messaging application built on top of the open standard Matrix. The platform serves public sector institutions and private enterprises requiring end-to-end encryption.

Secure messaging platform Element has secured £21.8m in Series B funding led by Protocol Labs and Metaplanet. The round also saw continued participation from Automattic, Notion, firstminute Capital, and Dawn Capital. The capital will be deployed to accelerate product development for mainstream users, expand enterprise offerings, and mature its hosting and peer-to-peer infrastructure.

The raise follows strong public sector adoption, including contracts with the French government and German defence and administration bodies. Element reported significant growth in cloud platform revenue and wider ecosystem usage over the preceding twelve months, reflecting rising demand for sovereign and decentralised communication tools.

From the founder

Investor perspective

"When communication is centralised it becomes a very appealing target for abuse; whether that’s through propaganda, surveillance, censorship or worse. Consumers need rescuing from surveillance capitalism, and organisations need a secure neutral way to communicate."
