Delta g raises £1.5m in pre-seed funding led by Science Creates Ventures to commercialise underground quantum sensors
The pre-seed round was led by Science Creates Ventures with backing from a syndicate of institutional and angel investors.
Delta g is a quantum technology company that develops gravity sensing systems for subsurface mapping. The firm spun out from the University of Birmingham to commercialise advanced quantum sensors.
Delta g has secured £1.5m in a pre-seed funding round to advance the commercial availability of its quantum gravity sensors. The financing was led by Science Creates Ventures, with participation from Quantum Exponential Group, Newable Ventures, Bristol Private Equity Club, and several angel investors.
The capital will be directed towards real-world industrial trials and further engineering work to reduce the size, weight, power, and cost of the hardware. This follows a decade of academic research into gravity gradiometry originating at the University of Birmingham.
In addition to the equity round, the company has also received an innovation grant from Innovate UK to support the development of its sensing platform. The technology aims to provide rapid and accurate subsurface mapping to reduce delays and costs in construction and utility projects.
From the founder
"The UK would massively benefit from delivering major infrastructure projects on time and on budget, and through increased productivity by reducing the time it takes to bring such projects to the point of benefitting people. A big part of this is the difficulty found in mapping the complex unseen environments and hidden critical infrastructure that resides under the ground. Considerable budgets are allocated to ensure that unexpected obstacles can be overcome. On HS2 alone, the contingency for unforeseen ground conditions is £248m."

Investor perspective
"We’re extremely excited to be working with such an incredibly talented team at Delta g. We believe this is a great fit for SCV, being a truly category-defining breakthrough in gravity measurements via quantum sensing, which has the opportunity to create an enormous impact in mapping the underground."
