Carbon Cell develops a sustainable, plastic-free alternative to traditional polymer foams using biochar and natural polymers. The material offers a low or negative carbon footprint for applications in packaging and insulation.

Carbon Cell has secured £1.2m in pre-seed financing to scale the production of its biochar-based foam material. Green Angel Ventures and Counteract led the round, with additional backing from the Royal College of Art's Design and Innovation S/EIS Fund, HERmesa, and One Planet Capital.

The capital will enable the London-based startup to transition from batch processing to continuous production, alongside executing manufacturing trials to establish the material as a viable replacement for conventional plastics. The company also plans to deliver thousands of units to early customers for evaluation.

This latest investment builds on prior grant funding and early support from organisations including Innovate UK, Carbon13, and Queen Mary Social Venture Fund.
